Sens’ orthopedic surgeon critically injured in crash

OTTAWA — A team doctor with the Ottawa Senators was in critical condition in hospital Sunday night after his motorcycle collided with a car Saturday afternoon.
Dr. Donald Chow, 53, was riding his motorcycle northbound on Fisher Avenue near Kyntire Private just before
3 p.m. Saturday, when a car pulled out in front of him.
Chow was thrown from his motorcycle when it slammed into the side of the car, according to police. He suffered serious head and chest injuries.
The woman driving the car was transported to hospital with minor injuries. Her car was seriously damaged .
Police could not say whether charges will be laid.
People who saw the scene after the crash described the cheap nfl jerseyscar as being “all dented,” with two shattered windows. The car had come to a stop on the southwest corner of Fisher Avenue and Kyntire Private, and Chow landed on the northwest corner.
Nicolas Ruszkowski, vice-president of communications at the Ottawa Hospital, confirmed Sunday afternoon that Chow is in critical condition at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, with his family by his side.
Chow has been with the Senators since their NHL debut in the 1992-1993 season. He is one of six team doctors who work with the team.
“The entire Senators family wishes Dr. Chow a full recovery and our thoughts and support are with him and his family,” said a statement from the Senators hockey club, issued Sunday afternoon.
Members of the team respected the wishes of Houston Texans jersey Chow’s family and did not provide comment to media Sunday night.
Chow is an orthopedic surgeon at the Ottawa Hospital and an assistant professor in the orthopedic surgery division at the University of Ottawa.
Online, some of Chow’s patients haven spoken highly of him.
On ratemds.com, where patients can rate their doctors, a former patient of Chow’s posted this comment:
“I was in a motorcycle accident in 2007 … Dr. Chow and his team gave my life back. He has operated on me twice and thanks to him I am not in a wheelchair.”
Kevin Mulholland, who works at the Citizen, was treated by Chow after he broke his back in a car accident in 1989. Chow told him he had a 95-per-cent chance of being paralysed. He spent Indianapolis Colts jerseyeight hours in an overnight surgery repairing Mulholland’s back.
“He put in hooks, and he put in bars, and he put in wires,” Mulholland said. “I thought I was talking to Dr. Frankenstein.”
Despite the odds, Chow fixed Mulholland’s back.
“He was top notch, and they told me I was really lucky to have him,” Mulholland said.
