Roberto Luongo Canucks captaincy debate overblown: Trevor Linden
VANCOUVER — In his days with the ncouver Canucks, Trevor Linden(notes) wore the 'C' and gave up the 'C' so no one is better equipped to wade into the current controversy about Roberto Luongo's(notes) captaincy in Vancouver.
Linden thinks the issue is getting just a little too much play.
“I'm not sure who is nfl jerseys
going to wear the 'C' or 'A' but, I gotta be honest, I think it's probably less important than people make it out to be,” Linden said Wednesday while promoting his new business venture, Club 16 — Trevor Linden Fitness. “I think the whole situation has been blown a bit out of proportion.”
Linden was named a Canucks co-captain in 1990 and then full-time captain a year later. He led the team to its greatest playoff glory in 1994, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, and remained captain until 1997 when he relinquished the role to newly signed and six-time Cup winner Mark Messier.
He says into today's NHL, the leadership role is Minnesota Vikings jersey
shared among a number of players even though just one is called the captain.
“Certainly my last several years here, and it started with Marc Crawford, teams operate with leadership groups,” said Linden, who played 19 NHL seasons and retired in 2008. “It's not one guy. If anyone thinks people are going to stop talking to Roberto because he gives the 'C' up, I've got news for you. He's the starting goaltender and one of their best players and, after every game and after every practice, they're going to want to talk to Roberto and that's not going to change.
“I think Roberto is a great player and a great leader and whether or not he has the 'C' on his jersey, he's going to be expected to be a leader in that locker room,” Linden added. “I think within that locker room, they've got a good group of leaders. Roberto is going to continue to be a leader, Henrik [Sedin] is going to be a leader and Ryan Kesler(notes) is going to be a leader. That's not going to change.”
Linden, meanwhile, remains out of the game that dominated most of his life. In addition to his new fitness venture, he's developing a building in Victoria, following on the heels of a project he developed in Vancouver's West Point Grey neighbourhood. He's also doing a lot of Indianapolis Colts jersey
cycling to keep fit.
“I love the game, but I'm enjoying what I'm doing now,” he said. “It's definitely interesting and I enjoy the flexibility in my schedule that allows me to do different things.”
Still, he wouldn't declare he is completely finished with hockey.
