30 Dec 10 The Cavs Impeccable Roster?

Lakers over Magic in seven.Okay, having gotten that out of the way, I've been meaning to address something that has been irritating the heck out of me this entire season. As the impending free agency of Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James threatens to overshadow anything this season has to offer, pundits across the media spectrum continue to analyze and over analyze on which team James will suit up for next season.Apparently, at least according to most experts, the team that is the odds on favorite to procure the services of Mr James are indeed his current employer, the Cavs. In the expertsquest to display their hoops intellect I keep hearingtwo overriding factors which suggest that LeBron would be betteroff remaining in Cleveland than leaving for the bright lights and big city ofReebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
say Manhattan, Chicago or even (gasp) Brooklyn.Firstly, it has been suggested that James would leave entirely too much money on the table if he were to bolt from Ohio, as the Cavs could offer hima higher salary than any other team.Yeah, whatever. See Shaquille O'Neal. But more on that later.Secondly, I keep hearing the most idiotic reason why James could never consider either New York or New Jersey as viable options and that is because of the weakness of those teams' rosters.Seriously?Aside from James, the Cavs starters are Mo Williams, Anthony Parker, Antwan Jamison and you pick - JJ Hickson, Anderson Varejo, Shaquille O Neal, Zydrunas Ilgauskas.Williams is a decent NBA point guard who hasn't nearly played up to the expectations the Cavs had of him when they managed to pry him from the Milwaukee Bucks. Compare Williams' stats of 15 ppg and 5 apg to New Jersey's Devin Harris' 17 7 for four-hundred thousand per year less. Some other numbers to consider: Anthony Parker 7 ppg - 2 apg/ Courtney Lee 12 ppg - 2 apg. Jamison 19 9/ Yi Jianlian 12 7 (Jianlian is eleven years younger). Lastly, you have to combine two, any two of Cleveland's centers to match or surpass the Nets' Brook Lopez stats of 19 ppg and 9 rpg at $2.2 million. Compared to Varejo's salary of $6.3 million, Shaq's $21 million and the $600 K they're paying Ilgauskas after whatever else they paid him at the start of the season Lopez is vastly unerpaid and yet more effective right now than anyone on the Cavs roster.Even the Knicks, who don't havethe coaching woes Nets' players are having to endure this season, seem to have players with more potential impact than the Cavs.Personally, in a pickup game pitting, Williams, Parker, Hickson and Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
Varejo against Knickerbockers Wilson Chandler, Al Harrington, Danilo Gallinari and David Lee I'd put my money on MSG boys every time. The truth is, without LeBron, the Cavs are just as much bottom feeders in the East as the Knicks and Nets. Add James to either New York or New Jersey and they are instantly contenders in the Eastern Conference. Such is the talent of LeBron James.Do you know who were the otherstarters for the Cavs during the 2006-07 season when they made it to the NBA Finals? Daniel Gibson, Drew Gooden, Sasha Pavlovic and Ilgauskas. Other stalwarts for that roster were Damon Jones, Donyell Marshall and Larry Hughes. Not exactly Championship pedigree, yet they managed to get by a Washington Wizard team that had a pre-injuryGibert Arenas, the aformentioned Jamisonand Caron Butler as well as a Piston team that featured Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Chris Webber. So the thought that the Knicks and Nets don't have enough talent to entice LeBron is absurd. In fact, I'm pretty sure that James and any D-League roster could get out of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Finally, while it's true that Cleveland could offer LeBron the most dollars in salary, the team that presents the opportunity for LeBron to make the most money over the next ten years is the New Jersey (soon to be) Brooklyn Nets. The Nets will have an owner with bottomless pockets, a new arena in what will essentially be their own community in Brooklyn and ties to the hip-hop industry that give LeBron cross marketing opportunities that he could never sniff in any other market including Manhattan, Chicago and Miami.Any clothing/apparrel partnership with rap music mogul and good friend Jay Z will almost certainly push James into the realm of theJordan Brand. At the point when James begins ro rival Jordan in apparrel and shoe sales as well as having a stake in future business enterprises with Jay Z, how Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
difficult do you think it will be to get any player he wants to come play with him in the Big Apple? It is difficult to fathomthe type of currencya marraigebetween Brooklyn and LeBron could generate. Seriously, we could be talking billions of dollars here.Bron Bron in Brooklyn buys a boatload of banners.Try saying that fast three times.

29 Dec 10 NBA Playoffs: Championship Stride Lost in the Snow of Denver

The Denver Nuggets entered the 2009-2010 NBA regular season with championship level expectations, although it seems as of late that the Nuggets should've picked the option of just getting into the playoffs and making a playoff push, not a Finals push. The energy level that the Nuggets have been bringing to their games as of late has been laughable. Just ask Carmelo who was on the sidelines with Kenyon Martin laughing about something. It's a direct reflection on their intensity as well.Laughable.It seems that the Nuggets don't really Baltimore Ravens jersey
care about being the team that most people thought would upset Los Angeles. It seems like they don't really care about going onto the NBA finals for the first time in franchise history. However, it is kind of hard to live up to those expectations as the Lakers looked sluggish in all four games against the Nuggets this year, and recently as well. From what it looks like to me, and I'm pretty sure every other basketball fan, that the Nuggets think they can turn their basketball switch on, the way they do their bathroom light when they enter the bathroom: automatically.Basketball is not game that has a switch. You either are in rhythm, or you're not.The Nuggets have been either giving up leads or find themselves trailing in the past couple of games. The only dominant performance that came from the Nuggets was this Monday against the Grizzlies.Either than that, the Nuggets were down by more than 15 in Oklahoma, lost the the Spurs at home, which they're 34-7 at, and never led against the Suns last night in a blow-out 123-101.As a direct quote from TNT's Kevin Harlen,"The barometer for this Nuggets team is the 20 assists."This is a mark that they have only hit twice in their last five games, and they won both of those games. Now even a Hermit could argue that all of this inconsistency and lack of focus could be because of the fact of their head coach, George Karl, is currently fighting cancer and is not with them, and that the Nuggets were missing Kenyon Martin for about 18 games, and also lost Ty Buffalo Bills jersey
Lawson for a little while. But the thing that strikes me is that the Nuggets came out last night with Kenyon Martin, their defensive QB in the lineup, and didn't show up.He usually is the enforcer, the guy who brings the intensity up when he's on the court, but it seemed like the Nuggets were playing without him last night (he did not play the second half due to the Nuggets wanting to be precocious).George Karl is not the yelly jumpy type of guy, and it's usually Kenyon Martin who does the inspiration talk. The defense was not there, and their offence was too much of as Amar'e said, isolation with Carmelo Anthony. Melo had 29 points on 28 shot attempts, and only got to the line twice.Yes, maybe all this inconsistent play is because of all the injuries, but look how the Blazers have been Carolina Panthers jersey
oing all year long. A direct quote from fellow Nugget writer Rich Kurtzman, "...injuries to fill a hospital wing, they are still competitive." Nuggets seem anything but competitive, or focused. The point here is that the Nuggets need to step it up as LeBron says it in those marvelous NBA commercials. Lets hope the whomping last night in Phoenix was a wake up call. The playoffs start Saturday, and their destiny lies in the hands of the Phoenix Suns, or the Utah Jazz.

28 Dec 10 Can the Boston Celtics Really Upset the Cavaliers? It's Easier Than You Think

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesLeBron James is the most complete player in the NBA, and the league's MVP, but despite all of his considerable talent, the fate of the Cleveland Cavaliers' series with the Boston Celtics is out of his hands.James still managed to score 24 points and snare seven rebounds, despite the pain from a sore elbow, and unless his injury makes it impossible to play, it is a near certainty he will have a significant impact on each game. But if Boston guard Rajon Rondo is able to duplicate his play from Monday night's home court-stealing Arizona Cardinals jersey
Celtics' win, it may not matter what James does, because Rondo just happens to be the most talented guard in the series. If you don't believe me, I'm sure Cavaliers' guard Mo Williamswill be more than willing to back up my assumption, and if not, his four point performance on 1-9 shooting while logging 35 minutes should be evidence enough.Rondo's defensive effort on Williams was exemplary for sure, but the rest of the Cavaliers' guards didn't fare much better as Anthony Parker and Delonte West teamed with Williams to score a combined 14 points for the evening. If that isn't bad enough, Rondo also managed to dish out 19 assists, which was two more than the entire Cavalier team combined.Six Celtics' players scored in double figures led by Ray Allen's 22 points, while only three Cavaliers were able to match that feat with Antawn Jamison and J.J. Hickson joining James.Boston won the game 104-86, and to be honest, the final 18 point margin is actually a lot less than it could have been, because the Celtics held a 25 point lead at one point.Boston won this game with strong defense, a refusal to run in the open court with the Cavaliers, and because the Celtics are a more talented team than Cleveland, even if they are a little older. Many will will not agree with my assertion, but take a moment to scan the rosters of each team, and then base your opinion on honesty, rather than the athleticism which courses through the Cleveland roster.Anderson Varejao and J.J. Hickson are skilled and athletic, but in terms of talent, they are not in the same category as Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace, especially when Wallace is motivated.Cleveland had no answer for Wallace in the post or the the perimeter, and it was his versatility that caused fits for which ever Cavalier was unlucky enough to draw him on defense.Wallace scored 17 off the bench and provided the scoring punch that had been missing in the Celtics' Game One loss, a game they led by 11 points before eventually succumbing in the Atlanta Falcons jersey
fourth quarter.Ray Allen, like Rondo, is just as good a guard as any on the Cleveland roster, if not better, and his long range shooting is what helped put the game out of reach once Cleveland made a run.In fact, James is the only player one could say is a better talent than any of the Celtics' players; but like Cleveland learned last year, James can't do it by himself (or did they really learn their lesson?).The Cavaliers failed last season for a variety of reasons, but it was mainly because of the failure of James' teammates to provide ample back up to his efforts, very similar to last night. It's not likely the Celtics will be able to play this type of game each time they take the court, but they do have home court advantage now, they are healthier than any other point this season, and they believe they can beat the Cavaliers. And why not be confident?Boston has the two best guards in the series in Rondo and Allen, the two best post players in Wallace and Garnett, and they have the experience of having been in this position before.Remember, it's the Celtics not the Cavaliers who have a championship pedigree, and despite their age, Boston has shown it has no fear of the younger, more athletic Cavaliers.James' elbow seems to be bothering him more and more as the series wears on, but imagine how it will feel if his Cavaliers fail to even the series in Boston, or even fall two games behind? Then James will be forced to deal with the usual litany of questions which follows defeat, except there will be a different line of questioning for James because his team is so heavily favored to advance.Well, that's not exactly true, because everyone outside of Cleveland and Charles Barkley felt the Celtics would put up much more of a fight than the disrespectful five games Barkley predicted.Maybe we all should have listened to the Celtics, because while everyone else was counting them out, they still spoke and carried themselves with the confidence of champions. In fact, we shouldn't be surprised at all, because when it Baltimore Ravens jersey
comes to winning tough playoff series on the road to a championship who do you think is more experienced? Boston or Cleveland? What many people fail to realize is the Celtics are also more talented of a team than the Cavaliers, and this shows up at every position except the one LeBron James plays.

27 Dec 10 2010 NBA Playoffs: Celtics' Playoff Run Stabilizing the City of Boston

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesIn the past decade, Boston sports have accumulated six World Championships, through all three major sports.Although most would never admit it, the typical Boston sports fan would likely be described as spoiled. The devotion to the local nine drives this powerful sports city, Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
which also enjoys the newfound fruition of a successful football franchise. The TD Garden regularly sells out, something which has been absent from the checklist since Larry Bird and Bobby Orr called it home.On the surface, all signs continue to point to paradise. Up until this past weekend, NESN routinely exercised the NESNPLUS outlet. Both the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins hogged airwaves. While results have soured as the calendar plugs towards summer, both teams have enthralled viewers albeit sometimes for all the wrong reasons. And then there were the Celtics. The Boston Celtics baffled fans, experts, even themselves, coming down the stretch of the regular season in March and April. Inconsistency on both sides of the ball plagued the oft-injured squad. Showered with boo's raining downing from the rafters on multiple nights, the Boston Celtics left little hope of seriously contending in the 2010 Playoffs. It seems as if Doc Rivers and Co. were collectively chucking the bird at common logic. The Celtics are peaking, or perhaps, resurrecting, at just the right time. Stifling defense coupled with the dazzling play of Rajon Rondo has created a very similar image to the team which hoisted banner 17 in 2008. The offense is yet again playing their game, on their terms. Every fault exposed throughout the beginning of spring has been reversed and corrected, creating a well oiled machine. The questions about checking ego's at the door come playoff time have been answered. Rasheed Wallace's suspect play, well that is a thing of the past(knock on wood). Injuries? What are those? The Celtics are not only playing well, but they are commanding.Commanding the paint so far this post season. Commanding the pace of Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
play. Commanding the Eastern Conference Finals 2-0. Most of all, commanding the top spot on the Boston sports totem pole. And that's just what the city needs. As pointed out earlier, on the surface Boston seems to be in tip top shape. The Bruins, Celtics, and Patriots all made the playoffs in their most recent calendar season and the Red Sox still have roughly 3/4 of the season to play. But as you dig deeper and peel backlayer upon layer a feeling of uncertainty is overwhelming. There is no secret that Patriot reign is nowhere near as dominant as the early 2000's. An inconsistent 2010 season illustrated by uncharasteric flaws has many fans finding the word rebuilding crawling to the tip of their toungue. For the first time, Bill Belichick has been broken, he has been beaten, and most of all he has been bewildered. The trademark 3-4 Patriots defense looked soft in 2009, a word that not even the most radical Patriot fan has used to describe the defense since the Belichick era. Grumbling from the locker room and aging offensive stars do nothing to quiet the critics in New England. There is also no secret that the Red Sox have put together a less than stellar performance to start the season, and 2009 was not nearly enough to hold off the naysayers. The demise of David Ortiz chronicles not only the fall of a super star but also a fall from grace amongst the Red Sox heavens. For the first time since Dan Duquette roamed the front office, there is not a true super star who fans can connect with fans on almost every level. The on-field performance is not anything to write home about either. Perhaps Theo Epstein was toying with us when he threw out the idea of run prevention. Lackluster pitching has prevented us from being able to put up enough runs to stay in ballgames, but the defense has not won any games so far. Jonathan Papelbon is not generating swings and misses on his fastball and Adrian Beltre just let another routine ground ball go through the wickets.Oh, did you hear?Yeah, Boston is now on the wrong side of history as well. Somehow between games three and games four, the NHL conducted the biggest hoax job to date, abducting every member of the Bruins roster and replacing them with imposters. All jokes aside, the mid-Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
series role reversing act the Bruins pulled only reminded fans of what they were really working with. Yes, surprisingly, the team that we saw for the first 82 regular season games was still there in the Eastern semi-finals.And then there were the Celtics.Despite heavy turbulence above the Boston area, the Celtics have landed smoothly. Not only did the team arrive and take it's spot amongst the NBA elite yet again, it did so while regaining it's swagger. After a game two win in Orlando, Paul Pierce did not hold back when mentioning that the Celtics would take these two in Boston as well, citing the fans as the driving factor behind the team.Tenacious defense yet again trademarks this playoff unit who have gone up against arguably the East's three biggest stars in Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, and Dwight Howard. The Celtics, who have been documented as struggling at times with the team before i concept Doc Rivers has set in place, are now working as one on defense behind the barking of Kevin Garnett.Perhaps the light bulb went on inside the locker room just as it has in the local media. With Ray Allen's contact expiring and Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett showing their age, this could realistically be the last opportunity Boston has at raising banner 18 for years to come. It was no secret that the ever so young nucleus was disassembled by General Manager Danny Ainge to win now. He got his championship in 2008, but a championship in 2010 would cement these moves as not only genius but also beneficiary to the franchise as well as the city. There does not seem to be a major Boston sports team who will be a serious player for a championship in the near future. As much as I hope the Patriots revert back to previous form and the Red Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
Sox suddenly emerge out of hibernation, it does not realistically look possible. Boston's best shot may be the Boston Bruins, and coming off this 3-0 collapse that is far from comforting. The time is now for the Boston Celtics. Another ring would not only satisfy the fans of Boston but put the fall of a sports city on hold. A 2010 championship would, if for nothing else, buy more time. This would keep excitement in Boston. It would make a potential devastating 2010 for the Boston Red Sox stomach-able. The city of Boston needs this more so than many would think.

26 Dec 10 2010 NBA Playoffs: Celtics Sparked By Nate Robinson in Game 6 Win over Magic

Elsa/Getty ImagesAfter much talk about breaking up the "big three" the Boston Celtics kept their core together. There were rumors that Nate Robinson wanted to be traded to the Celtics but no one thought it would happen. In the end the Celtics traded Bill Walker, JR Giddens, and Eddie House for Robinson. Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
Fast forward to April and Doc Rivers was quoted as saying that Robinson would win a playoff game for them.Everyone thought he was just trying to justify what was thought as a catastrophic mistake.Robinson had done nothing but lose during his brief NBA career, and the Celtics had traded crowd favorite Eddie house to get him.Let's face it; the New York Knicks under Mike D'Antoni are not a selfless team.Nate had never been asked to play solid basketball and as a result he saw less time on the court. To Nate'scredit he did not let it effect his relationship with his teammates. Robinson spent the last 30 games on the bench but was the loudest cheerleader on the team. He celebrated every time his team made a solid play and continued to work hard. All the while Doc kept whispering in his Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
ear the words he uttered on April9that Robinson will be a major factor in a playoff game. That game was last night. The Celtics showed Nate that if he embraced what it meant to be a Celtic his one shining moment would come. The second quarter was the Nate Robinson show. It was the match-up no one saw coming. Robinson a.k.a Mighty Mouse vs. Dwight "Superman" Howard; it was a battle for the ages. Mighty Mouse had found a crack in the Magics defense; Superman was there cape fluttering in the paint, waiting at the summit. Mighty Mouse remained undaunted as he too put on his cape and propelled himself into Superman's chest. He may have missed the shot, but that foul put Howard in foul trouble and the Celtics little-big man ignited the team. Robinson did what he was brought here to do: be an energy guy of the bench. Paul Pierce was heard saying after the game, that Robinson became a man last night. Everyone understood that he was the one that cemented the win for Boston. During his post game interviews Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
Robinson didn thump his chest like he does on the court; he spoke about staying ready for the opportunity. Here to you Nate Robinson.

25 Dec 10 Analysis: A Tale Of Two Amar'e's and Why The Knicks Are Surging

Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesThe Knicks are on a tear that has not been seen since the days of Jeff Van Gundy. They are 13-9 through 22 games, but more importantly are 10-1 through the last eleven. Starting the season 3-8, most people were ready to write off the Knicks as another failed season as the result of another failed off-season. They had failed to land LeBron, and had failed to land any of the other premier free agent guards i.e. Wade, Joe Johnson, Rudy Gay. They had just given a huge $100 million contract to Amar'e Stoudemire who was coming off Philadelphia Eagles jersey
an impressive second half and playoff run with the Suns, but had questions coming in.Undergoing micro-fracture surgery several years ago, would STAT be able to stay healthy and log heavy minutes? Maybe the biggest question though was how would Amar'e adjust to an NBA life post-Steve Nash?Well over half of Amar'e points for the Suns have come off Steve Nash assists. Would Amar'e be able to be as dominant without the guy who had created so many of his scoring opportunities?Through the first 10 games, it didn't appear so. Amar'e was averaging multiple turnovers a game, was forcing the ball into the defense, and was catching the ball 18-20 feet from the basket. And when he did score it was usually at the expense of any type of offensive cohesion. Then something funny happened. The Knicks suddenly found themselves in California and rattled off three consecutive road wins against the Kings, Clippers, and Warriors. This coming off of a previous 6 game losing streak. They didn't play the stellar teams of the West, but what they did do was win games - something New York had been struggling to do ever since Jeff Van Gundy left as head coach. How did they do it? High powered scoring which involved a fast uptempo pacing of the offense, hot perimeter shooting and most importantly, Amar'e feasting inside the paint. And when I say feasting, Amar'e has been a monster during this current tear. Through the last 11 games Amar'e is averaging 29.5 points per contest. He is season average is currently 25.3 Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
which puts him third in the league in scoring. The increased outburst is definitely a conscious effort to not only get Amar'e more touches, but to get him those touches closer to the basket. Earlier in the season, Amar'e was catching the ball 18 feet beyond the basket and tried to beat every defender one-on-one. He forced the ball into the teeth of defense and was swarmed by rotating defenders which led to turnovers offensive fouls. Now, with the improved play of Raymond Felton, Amar'e is feasting on opportunities where he is catching the ball 6 feet to the basket. Amar'e is hands down the best finishing big-man in the NBA, and when a player of his talents is catching the ball that close to the basket, great things are going to happen. His dunking prowess is what has been making SportsCenter but his inside game has been the most impressive. In addition to his quickness, and jumping ability, STAT has amazing touch and can alter his shot in the air when close to the basket and still finish ; something usually privy to elite guards. With his ability to finish, and the Knicks ability to continuously feed him the ball in the right manner is has opened up the offense for other players. Chandler, Gallinari, Felton, and now even Shawne Williams have been finding themselves wide open on the perimeter San Diego Chargers jersey
as the result of double or even triple teams. The Knicks high powered offense has pushed them to 107.7 points per game, third in the league. The reasoning for the Knicks current streak is pretty clear. It's not as simple as give Amar'e the ball, but give the Amar'e the ball close to the basket. How the Knicks accomplish this is another story, but it has been largely because of Felton's ability to attack the basket and create passing lanes. Essentially, as long as the Knicks continue to create opportunities for Amar'e, they will continue to be competitive and win games. They have yet to beat an elite team but that could change as Boston visits the Garden on December 15.

24 Dec 10 Punting Cats: Is It Wrong?

Image from motherjones.comFor the uninitiated, this has little to do with animal abuse, in fact nothing to do with it. Punting cats (categories) is a controversial fantasy sports technique rarely used to perfection. The idea is to dismiss or ignore one entire category in favor of bulking up on the others. In baseball, the category most widely punted, and easiest to ignore, is saves. Just don't draft any top closers, or any closers at all. The theory behind this is that a lot of closers are bad. The only category they help in is the Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
aforementioned saves. Rather than collect saves, owners might rather employ middle relievers with great ERAs, WHIPS, and K/9 numbers and forgo saves. The theory makes sense, depending on your league scoring. In head to head scoring leagues, punting a category is a good way to go. There is no season tally that matters. All that matters is your score for each week, so aiding three cats while dumping one is mathematically feasible, assuming it works. In rotisserie scoring leagues, however, punting a cat is very, very risky. Finishing last in one category puts you at a huge disadvantage when considering season ending tallies.Well, I have my fantasy basketball auction draft this weekend. In basketball, the most obvious 'puntable cat' occurs by drafting Dwight Howard. He is a beast on the boards and collects more blocks than you'll know what to do with. He scores a ton and puts up a fantastic field goal percentage. Howard is everything you want out of your center spot. Well, not everything. You see, Dwight Howard is the most cancerous free throw shooter in the league. This is not because he always ends with the worst percentage, because he doesn't. But his combination of poor percentage and tremendously large amount of attempts is a sure sign you will finish last in that category if he assumes a starting role on your roster. Even helping the cause by drafting a free throw shooting savant like Steve Nash will not necessarily lift you from the gutter. Now you see the dilemma.Do you draft Dwight Howard in a rotisserie league, almost assuring yourself of finishing near the top in everything he's good at, yet guaranteeing a last place finish in one category? My obvious answer is no. Don't draft him. Don't bother. Draft a couple cheaper big men who will hopefully cover the counting stats yet won't kill you in free throw percentage. But perhaps a more interesting situation of punting a cat is in regards to turnovers. Not every league uses turnovers as a category, yet lots do. Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
The problem here stems from the widely used technique in fantasy basketball of drafting tons of point guard types. These are not necessarily point guards, but players who accumulate point guard stats: three pointers, assists, steals, free throw percentage. Drafting all point guard types and power forward types usually covers every stat you would need to target and sets a team up nicely. However, when drafting all point guard types, an unavoidable consequence is inheriting lots of turnovers. Even the very best Chris Pauls and Rajon Rondos commit a lot of turnovers. This is just the way it is. Point guards have the ball in their hands all the time. Just by percentages alone, they are most likely to commit a turnover, whereas centers often commit very few. They don't have the opportunities.Of course you can try to draft the forwards who rarely turn the ball over, a Channing Frye or Anderson Varejao. But to draft point guards who have low turnover numbers is a daunting task. The other key element to this is the unpredictability of the stat itself. There is really no way to know, looking at on overall roster, which team will finish first or last in turnovers. It is somewhat random. So do you bank on that, or do you avoid point guard types and try to make up ground elsewhere? In this instance, and frankly this is the only time in fantasy sports I would advise it, I would punt the cat, technically speaking. (I am never one to punt saves in fantasy baseball. It is too easy of a category to excel in. Why throw away the points?) In my auction draft, I plan on bidding on point guard types until the cows come home. And, no, I don't know what that saying means or where it comes from. Perhaps I will glance at the turnover numbers when considering my power forward types, but overall, I will draft like it is not a category at all. Why screw myself up by thinking Mike Bibby is somehow better than Russell Westbrook? If you start considering turnovers, you start avoiding players who accumulate lots of Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
points, just on the chance you win the turnover battle. We know Dwight Howard will be near the league lead in blocks and rebounds. We also know he will be terrible at free throw shooting. However, with turnovers, we don't really KNOW how good or bad a season someone will have. I am going to punt the cat and draft my point guard types. Feel free to do the opposite though, and draft a bunch of small forwards who are careful with the ball. In fact, do this and join my league because while you may finish first in turnovers, I'll be way ahead of you in everything else.

23 Dec 10Los Angeles Lakers vs. Minnesota T-Wolves: A Perfect Road Trip, a Perfect Barnes

Harry How/Getty Images“Oh, my God. He’s playing like Tim Duncan right now.”A random bystander catches me off-guard, and I nearly fall off the sofa. I decided to get out of the house for once, and headed over to Chapman’s Law School building. I’m catching Arizona Cardinals jersey
the game in the school lounge, getting a little too comfortable on the couch. These students seem desperate for a breath of fresh air, as one by one, they stop by and catch a few brief moments of the game. This particular one was referring to Darko Milicic. And he’s right. Darko’s playing like Tim Duncan with his defensive stance and a huge block on Pau and Lamar. First quarter is over. Why, oh, why do bad teams play so well against us? I get the feeling Kurt Rambis is handing out strategy guides on how to exploit the triangle offense.Without warning, Barnes passes to Odom for a slam dunk and Kobe hits a three-pointer to extend the lead to 13. A cute Asian girl behind me chimes in, “The problem isn’t our offense.” She’s also right, because three minutes later, the lead is back down to single digits. Darko goes on a rampage and blocks Odom, Pau then Kobe to kick up the swat count to 6, and the Lakers end the first half off of Kobe’s miss. Law students make for very good observers. I should hang around them more. But the Lakers start to pick it up in the third. Kobe goes in for a driving dunk off a bullet pass from Fisher, and proceeds to return the favor by assisting Fisher on a 22-footer. After trading baskets with the Wolves, the Lakers substitute in Barnes for Ron Artest. From here on out, it’s Barnes’s show. Matt Barnes drops three consecutive 3-pointers with the third one counting for an And-One. He’s unusually in the zone Atlanta Falcons jersey
tonight, making a 4-point play with ease. The Lakers fans in the stadium roar in excitement but suddenly I have nobody to celebrate with. Sneaky law students. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers go on a 10-0 run, with Barnes hitting his fifth 3-pointer after a turnover by Beasley. The Lakers clear the arena with 112 on the scoreboard to the Wolves’ 95. John Ireland catches Barnes before he heads to the locker room, and announces that it was a perfect night for the small forward from UCLA.24 points on 7-7 field goal, and five perfect free throws. This is definitely an improvement over our last bout with the Timberwolves, where we barely squeaked by on Kobe’s 33-point night. Still, Darko and Beasley both recorded a double-double, and Darko (seriously, Darko?) finishedBaltimore Ravens jersey
his night with a tip shot to end the score count at 23.The defense question still lingers, and we get the news that Bynum is eyeing a return on Christmas. Regardless, it was a perfect road trip, and a perfect night for Barnes.I’m personally curious as to how we’ll play against the Heat with Bynum making his 2011 debut on the 25th, but these law students are pulling ninja moves on me. I’m going to a bar next time.

NBA Free Agency: Why It's Likely LeBron James or Dwyane Wade Sign With New York

With the Knicks recent signing of Amar’e Stoudemire, they just made this free agency period more interesting. The Knicks now have a recruiting tool in Amar’e Stoudemire, and are very alive in the LeBron James sweepstakes. The Knicks, however, could also end up with the other big name in this class, Dwyane Wade. It is complicated but there is a very likely possibility that the Knicks willend up with either LeBron James or Dwyane Wade, especially with their roster upgrade adding Amar’e Stoudemire. With the Detroit Lions
Stoudemire signing the Knicks now can form a title contender around another superstar if they were to add either LeBron James or Dwyane Wade. The Knicks, unlike the Bulls, Heat, and Nets can now sell LeBron James of the fact that he’s playing alongside a star. In fact, Stoudemire is afive time all-star in the midst of his prime, who perfectly complements James’ game, and will be by far the best player James has ever played alongside. The other teams hoping to acquire James can only sell James on the possibility of playing alongside another star. Signing Amar’e Stoudemire makes the Knicks the only team that can sell both LeBron James and Dwyane Wade that they’ll have a legitimate 2nd star. The question is how willthe Knicks end up with either of thetwo big stars. Some dominos will certainly have to fall in order for it to happen, but here are the possible scenarios for the Knicks to end up with one of the two superstars. Scenario 1: LeBron James andChris Bosh sign with the Chicago Bulls or New Jersey Nets. Knicks then acquire Dwyane Wade. If LeBron James and Chris Bosh were to pair somewhere other than Miami where they would form the super team without Dwyane Wade, it’s almost certain Wade signs with the Knicks. With thetwo stars Wade wants to play with off the board, Wade will have to decide whether he wants to face them with a supporting cast of Carlos Boozer, Michael Beasley, and Mario Chalmers, or with a supporting cast of Amar’e Stoudemire, Danilo Gallinari, and Wilson Chandler.Wade would assume the role of playmaker in D’Antoni’s offense and run the offense with Stoudemire the same way the offense was ran in Phoenix with Steve Nash. Wade and Stoudemire would betwo dynamic scorers who would run the best pick and roll in basketball. Wade and Stoudemire almost teamed up at the deadline when the Heat tried to get a deal done with the Suns and even offered Green Bay Packers jersey
Michael Beasley. However, the Heat didn’t get a deal done and were empty handed at the trade deadline. Honestly it’s a very easy choice, Wade would join the Knicks and if all were to go as expected. James and Wade would clash in the eastern conference finals, both hoping to challenge the Lakers for the title. Scenario 2: Wade and Bosh sign with Heat, Knicks sign LeBron JamesThis could be the more likely scenario due to the fact that Wade would rather stay in Miami. The Heat would formtwo thirds of the south beach super team, and LeBron James would havethree decisions to make. He could stay in Cleveland and team with Mo Williams and Antawn Jamison. He could join the Bulls and play with Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, and potentially Carlos Boozer or David Lee. He could join the Knicks and play alongside Stoudemire, Gallinari, and Wilson Chandler. It would be a close call, but James would have the chance to play alongside a top big man in Stoudemire, and a shooter in Danilo Gallinari, those are the two players James needs to play with, a mobile big man who can score in the paint and run the pick and roll, and a shooter. Stoudemire and Gallinari certainly fit James’ needs. The Bulls on the other hand don’t have a shooter, and Derrick Rose can only play to a fraction of his abilities because he and LeBron James’ styles are too similar. LeBron James and the Knicks would likely face the Heat in the eastern conference finals due to Houston Texans jersey
Boston’s old roster, and the Orlando Magic lacking a true go to scorer. The bottom line is that two of the big free agents left might want to play together, leaving one of them alone if he resigns with his old team. The Knicks however already have a core in place that is missing its biggest piece in order to contend for a title, a superstar.

Are the St. Louis Cardinals Preparing for Life Without Albert Pujols?

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesOn the one hand, it is almost unthinkable. The idea of Albert playing anywhere other than St. Louis. However, if you look at contracts to Ryan Howard and, more recently, to Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford, the insanity out in the baseball market is making thatCardinals nightmare dangerously close to becoming reality.I know they play different positions, but if Werth and Crawford can command 7-years, $100 million plus contracts, just what is the best hitter in baseball worth on the open market?Well, for starters, take the Howard deal...please. The New England Patriots jersey
Phillies donated $125 million over five years, which comes to $25 million per year and that was not on the open market. If the Cards fail in their current efforts to extend Pujols now, he will almost assuredly wait for free agency and test the market. He has saidthat he will not negotiate during the season. If that happens, look out. Hell may freeze over, there could be peace in the Mideast, heck, the Cubs could win the World Series! In other words, it would be unprecedented. Unless I missed it and Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Stan the Man ever hit free agency, there is simply no comparison to a guy like Pujols hitting the street. If his current value is $25-$28 million per year now, his value as a free agent could easily top $30 million annually and that is something that the Cards just can't afford, if they want to contend without breaking the bank.If St, Louis harbors the real desire to have Albert long-term, he must be signed this winter. If he is allowed togo beyond that time frame, he is gone. Pure and simple. What, you say, there are only a handful of teams that could afford him and also have an opening at first base? Well, that may be true on the surface, but I guarantee you that if a player like Pujols becomes available, and assuming he has a typical 2011 season, teams will make exceptions.Remember, the Red New Orleans Saints jersey
Sox do not have a long-term deal in place withA-Gon, though that is certainly expected. And even the Yankees, who have Tex locked up forever, could make a play for Albert. Remember, he could play another position. You think a team can't fit a .331/.426/.624/1.050 bat into their lineup? Hello, Washington Nationals, New York Mets. Hell, maybe even the aforementioned Cubbies might be willing to wade into that pool.According to ESPN, "Bryan Burwell of the Post-Dispatch hints Wednesday that the Cardinals could bow out if Pujols is demanding $28 million to $30 million.""The longer you listen to Cardinals officials who carefully broach the subject, the more it sounds like they are either trying to get you to start getting comfortable with the possible reality of life without Pujols in the not-so-distant future, or at the very least New York Giants jersey
take the concept out for a little public stroll for their own prospective negotiating benefit," Burwell writes. So while life without The Machine may seem impossible to fathom for Cardinals fans, perhaps they should be getting used to the idea. I still believe they will sign Albert to a long-term deal, but it had better happen in the next 10 weeks.Orhe could be wearing pinstripes in 2012.

20 Dec 10 Boise State Football: One on One Interview With Former Bronco Jared Zabransky

Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty ImagesIn a Bleacher Reportexclusive, former Boise State QB Jared Zabransky gave a phone interview to us while back in Boise today. It was Zabransky who executed the famous Statue of Liberty play, along with RB Ian Johnson, to stun powerhouse Oklahoma in overtime of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.b/r: First off, I understand that you are holding a Q&A with fans tomorrow inBoise at the End Zone Restaurant for the Good Hands Roadside Event, could you tell us a little more about that?Jared Zabransky:Basicallyit's to promote the Good Hands Roadside Assistance Program that Allstate just came out with. The program is free to join for those who want to join it, and it's a pay as you go service. So that if you have a problem somewhere and need a tow, or a tire changed, there's flat rates and you pay as you go for the service. There's noannualfee or anything like that.If you want more information go to goodhandsroadside.com, or they're coming to the End Zone tomorrow on the corner of University and Broadway [in Boise] and myself and Spencer Hall, who is a fellow columnist who is driving from his Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey home base in Atlanta to promote it. We'll be doing some trivia, Boise State football trivia there. The kicker there is that everyone who signs up for Good Hands Roadside Assistance gets their name entered into a drawing for two tickets to the Allstate Sugar Bowl.b/r: That's anamazingopportunity to have theopportunityto get tickets to see one of those big bowls.Jared Zabransky: Really, this is a no-brainer, because you don't have to pay for the Good Hands Roadside assistance unless you need it.b/r: How does it feel to be back in Boise?Jared Zabransky: It's nostalgic. It's always nice to be back here. I still own a home here. We felt is was better to stay near the in-laws and train here in the offseason. It brings back found memories when I come back.b/r: As you know, tomorrow night will be the final home game for seniors Titus Young and Austin Pettis. What words of advice do you have for them as they prepare to move to the next level?Jared Zabransky: My word of advice would be to take it one thing at a time, and don't be overwhelmed with everything. Right now they're focused on finishing theseason, and their bowl game, and the all star game. So you got to take it step-by-step. If you look too far ahead you kinda get lost in translation with all of the fun things that they have going on in the next few months. Really, just work as Reebok Dallas Cowboys #9 Tony Romo Realtree camo Jersey hard as you can and leave nothing to chance. Maximize your potential as far as what you put forth to accomplish your dreams.b/r: What did you enjoy most about playing for Boise State?Jared Zabransky: What I enjoyed most was being around the guys, as well as winning football games. You take that for granted, especially when you get to the next level and see how much of a business it is, and how important wins are in yourorganisation and the job security of your fellow teammates and coaches. You kinda take that for granted, especially when you're with a good team like Boise. Winning is really second nature there. That's probably what I enjoyed most was winning and being around the guys.b/r: While things haven't quite worked out in the NFL for you, but you've found your way onto the Edmonton Eskimos and have started two games this year. What do you see in your future as a QB?Jared Zabransky: Well, hopefully it's bright. I was able to start two games and we won them both. I caused a lot of eyebrows to be raised and questions to be asked. All I can do as far as my personal career goes. I played well and left it on the field. I was happy with what I was able to do this year. I've got some workouts with some Reebok Denver Broncos #15 Tim Tebow Realtree camo Jersey NFL teams this year, it's my option year. I hope the end up in the best spot possible, whether it's up in Edmonton for a few more years or apositiondown here. I'm just trying to be in the best position for both me and my family.b/r: The ending of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, the "Statue Left" play, that completely changed college football. It gave a non-traditional football team a huge win over a more traditional power in Oklahoma. Tell me a little about how you felt during after that final play.Jared Zabransky: Well, I was happy. It was all my dreams coming to fruition. You work hard, and your team works hard and to see that come to the forefront to live it's a great feeling. I think our team as anentiretyknew that game was very important not only to us as the 2006-2007 Boise State school, but also for our conference, and around the country. It changed a lot of things. You see a lot of progression and recognition that we deserved. It's mapped out a pretty good path for guys that are playing right now.b/r: I remember watching that play and jumping up and down at the end of it. I've always enjoyed the high powered offense and the trickeration that happens now and again.Jared Zabransky: It was fun to play, and I'm glad we hung onto it until we did.It was a real pleasure to speak with Jared Zabransky. For those in Boise, Jared Zabransky will be at the End Zone Restaurant from 11:30-12:30 tomorrow (December 4th) for the Good Hands Roadside event. Make sure to stop by!

19 Dec 10 Week 11 NFL Power Rankings: Eagles Fly To Top Spot

Michael Vick is the talk of the NFL and has the Eagles thinking big.Chris McGrath/Getty ImagesIt was an exciting Week 11, filled with last minute finishes. The Falcons won on a late touchdown to Roddy White, the Jets took down the Browns in overtime on a Santonio Holmes touchdown and Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
the Jaguars won thanks to a Hail Mary caught by Mike Thomas. Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty exciting week, wouldn't you?All four AFC North teams lost in Week 11. The Cowboys showed some signs of life, and Bills fans can rejoice because their team won't go win less this season. As for Lions fans, they have lost 25 straight games on the road and counting. And if that isn't enough, Michael Vick and the Eagles sent a message to the rest of the NFL, embarrassing the Redskins 59-21 on Monday Night Football. The Eagles massacre of the Redskins earns them the top spot in this week's power rankings.1. Philadelphia Eagles (9): 6-3. Michael Vick is playing like a man possessed, and this Eagles team may be the best in the whole NFL. Sunday Night's game against the Giants has gotten even bigger.2. Atlanta Falcons (10): 7-2. I'll admit I had the Falcons too low last week, and their win against the Ravens bumps them up to number two. Matt Ryan and Roddy White have developed something special.3. New England Patriots (6): 7-2. Why did I ever doubt a Bill Belichick coached team? The Patriots were all business Sunday night. Next up is a showdown with Peyton Manning and the Colts.Tom Brady was flawless on Sunday, scoring four total touchdowns.Chris McGrath/Getty Images4. New York Jets (5): 7-2. Good teams win close games like that, and Jets have done it two weeks in a row. Mark Sanchez played great.5. Baltimore Ravens (2): 6-3. The Ravens defense let them down late, and it cost them the game. They'll rebound in Carolina.6. Green Bay Packers (4): 6-3. Coming out of their bye week, the Packers will face Brett Favre for the last time in his career.7. Indianapolis Colts (7): 6-3. The Colts are 6-3 despite getting hit bad by the injury bug. Next they travel to Foxborough.8. Pittsburgh Steelers (1): 6-3. What happened to the Steelers defense against the Patriots? They got lit up by Tom Brady.9. New Orleans Saints (8): 6-3. With Reggie Bush returning this week, and a wide open NFC, watch out for the Saints.10. New York Giants (3): 6-3. So much for that dominant Giants defense, they got lit up by the Cowboys Sunday. It gets tougher in Philly on Sunday Night Football.11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (14): 6-3. Is it time to start believing in theBucs? Raheem Morris has done an amazing job this season. 12. Oakland Raiders (12): 5-4. The first place Raiders come out of their bye week with two big road tests: At Pittsburgh, and at San Diego. Will the Bears win the NFC North? Will the Bears win the NFC North?Yes32.1%No67.9%Total votes: 10913. Chicago Bears (18): 6-3. Jay Cutler made some bad throws, but the Bears defense did enough for them to beat the Vikings. They have a short week, traveling to Miami on Thursday night.14. San Diego Chargers (15): 4-5. At 4-5, the Chargers are a game out of the AFC West lead and should get to 5-5 with the Broncos coming to town on Monday Night Football.15. Tennessee Titans (11): 5-4. Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
Randy Moss was a non-factor in his first game as a Titan, catching just one pass for 26 yards. It doesn't look like he has much left in the tank.16. Miami Dolphins (16): 5-4. The Dolphins won their first home game of the season, losing both Chad Henne and Chad Pennington for the season. Let the Tyler Thigpen era begin.17. Kansas City Chiefs (13): 5-4. Are the Chief's this year's version of the 2009 Broncos? Their grip on the AFC West has loosened.18. Jacksonville Jaguars (21): 5-4. The Gus Johnson theory was in full throttle on Sunday when Mike Thomas caught David Garrard's Hail Mary throw as time expired.19. Seattle Seahawks (26): 5-4. That was a nice road win by the Seahawks, and they are sitting at first place in the NFC West right now. Not that that's an accomplishment.20. St. Louis Rams (17): 4-5. Sam Bradford put together a great drive to send it into overtime, but I wish they took a shot in the end zone during that drive. Will their home record remain perfect against the Falcons? The Texans woes continued on Sunday in JacksonvilleMike Ehrmann/Getty Images21. Cleveland Browns (19): 3-6. One thing is for certain: The Browns have found their quarterback of the future in Colt McCoy. Did anyone expect him to be this good?22. Houston Texans (20): 4-5. After coming back from a 17-3 deficit, that game couldn't have ended worse for the Texans. How do they recover from that loss?23. Washington Redskins (22): 4-5. The Redskins should have stayed home to save themselves the embarrassment of that game. I'm still confused as to why Donovan McNabb got that five year, $78 million extension after all that happened.24. Minnesota Vikings (23): 3-6. The Brad Childress watch continues in Minnesota. It's only a matter of time before he gets fired.25. San Francisco 49ers (28): 3-6. You've gotta give Troy Smith credit for converting from 3rd and 32 to take the lead late in the game. The Niners are alive in the NFC west.26. Denver Broncos (29): 3-6. The Broncos unloaded on the Chiefs, and Tim Tebow continues to be more and more involved in the offense.27.Dallas Cowboys (32): 2-7. Jason Garret looks like a genius after the Cowboys' win in New York. He had them playing inspired football. Their season is over, but can they play spoiler for the rest of the season?Kyle Williams and the Bills can celebrate. They aren't going defeated.Rick Stewart/Getty Images28. Arizona Cardinals (24): 3-6. Any aspirations the Cardinals had of Reebok New Orleans Saints #9 Drew Brees Realtree camo Jersey
winning the NFC West can be put to an end. They are three games behind the Seahawks and lost both games to them. Is it too late to call up Kurt Warner and beg him to come back?29. Cincinnati Bengals (27): 2-7. That's six straight losses for the Bengals and counting. Yes, I did have them reaching the AFC Championship game before the season started. Oops.30. Detroit Lions (25): 2-7. I need some explanation from Shaun Hill as to what he was thinking on that two point conversion. Did he realize they needed it to tie the game?31. Buffalo Bills (30): 1-8. Can you imagine if the Bills had blown that game on Sunday? Thankfully they didn't and got their first win of the season.32. Carolina Panthers (31): 1-8. I get the feeling we will be seeing Tony Pike sometime this season if Jimmy Clausen continues to be ineffective.

18 Dec 10 Kansas City Chiefs: Head Coach Todd Haley Not Gracious in Blowout Loss

Justin Edmonds/Getty ImagesAt the conclusion of yesterday's embarrassing loss at the hands of division rival Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs head Todd Haley was none too pleased with his counterpart Josh McDaniels. At mid-field, instead of the traditional shaking of hands and a few words, Haley Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
pointed at McDaniels and said a few choice words that I'm sure weren't encouraging. When asked by reporters what he said, Haley called it a private moment between the two coaches.I understand that Haley was mad because the Broncos, after jumping out to their big lead, kept on passing the ball on offense and continued blitzing on defense, but in the NFL (especially this season), no lead is safe. Also, what is with the stigma of running up the score? Why should one team dial back their game plan because the other can't stop it?After all, what if the Broncos had started playing soft and the Chiefs began a come back and the Broncos couldn't get their offense going again? If that would have happened, this article could very well be about the Broncos not finishing off their opponent when they Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
had the chance.Haley shouldn't be mad at Josh McDaniels for spanking him, but rather at his team for not showing up to a big division game after dropping a close one to another division rival the week before.Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesIf he was so upset with McDaniels continuing the passing attack, then maybe he should have asked his defense to do something about it.Listen, I'm all for good sportsmanship in football, but it boggles my mind that the same people who get miffed about teams resting starters when their playoff scenario is all sewn-up Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
are the same people who want teams to just run out the clock with a big lead.No one likes to get beat down, but sometimes it happens, and the only way to prevent it is to do something about it. Maybe next time Haley will address his anger to the right people (his team) and not the opposing sideline.Until he does that, the Chiefs won't be the team we thought they were three weeks ago.

17 Dec 10 Vince Young and Jeff Fisher: One of the Two Has To Go

Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesEarlier today, during the Titans 19-16 home loss to the Washington Redskins, their quarterback Vince Young injured his throwing hand during the second half on a completion to Nate Washington. Head coach Jeff Fisher said Young's injury was a torn flexor tendon and it may need season ending surgery. Young went to the locker room and had his thumb taped up then came out and used a glove to warm back up, but Fisher quickly kept Young out of the game as he put the team on the shoulders of Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
unproven rookie quarterback Rusty Smith. Young was upset about being benched and after the game threw a temper tantrum as he threw half his uniform, including his shoulder pads, into the stands. To me this is unacceptable and deserves punishment of some sort, but coach Fisher said in a post game press-conference that Rusty Smith would be the teams starting quarterback. Fisher is the longest tenured coach in the NFL right now and has taken the Oilers/Titans through a rollercoaster ride while he has been the coach. They made the Super Bowl in 1999, but since then it hasn't been the best in Tennessee. They have had a couple of four and five win seasons, mixed with some nine and 10 win seasons. Fisher has led the team all the way, while gaining and losing support of fans as he has went. Fans and the media alike have questioned Young since he was drafted in 2006. He has a winning record as a starter including turning an 0-6 team last year into an 8-8 team when he was given the starting job. Who do the Titans need to get rid of to improve their chances of winning it all?Who do the Titans need to get rid of to improve their chances of winning it all?Vince Young.47.1%Jeff Fisher.28.9%Both.13.2%Neither.10.7%Total votes: 242I myself have been a huge fan of Vince Young and was crushed when he lost his starting job with his knee injury in 2008, and I was ecstatic when he got it back last season. Yet again I have that feeling of disbelief as he has lost it again, because of Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
a coach who is so quick to throw him under the bus. As quick as Fisher is to throw Young under the bus, he is right over Kerry Collins shoulder, which is bad as Collins has lost a lot over the past couple of seasons. With Fisher I am quick to back him up in any argument just as I am with Young. He has been the coach of my favorite team before I was even old enough to even choose my own favorite team. But now, I am done backing up coach Fisher. Fisher has been a great coach over the years and has done a lot for the Titans franchise, but if it is between him or Vince Young I believe Mr. Adams will take the quarterback he wanted to be the future of his team. The team he has built into a billion dollar franchise. Bud Adams was also the one to point the finger at the quarterback position last season and made Fisher start Young. I understand benching a guy over an injury or giving him extra work in practice for screwing up, but last week when Young came in and ran around fine I was skeptical of his ankle injury, and to why Collins had started. Now everything makes sense as everyone has repeated Fisher wants Young to fail. I used to deny it over and over, but now I know it is true. Grant Halverson/Getty ImagesSince Fisher doesn't want to give Young a chance maybe it is time to cut ties and stop giving him the chance since he still doesn't have a Super Bowl ring in over 15 years. Bring in a proven coach like Bill Cowher and let him take them team over and lead it in the right direction. That is what I Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
feel needs to happen, and I believe it needs to happen this offseason, I am tired of waiting on my team to win the Lombardi Trophy when they have a coach that isn't giving them a chance. Anyways, I know this has been a bit of an endless rant, and I am sorry if I wasted your time. Maybe you enjoyed it and feel the same way? If not be sure to let me know how you feel about the hole situation, I am always open to a new opinion on a situation.

16 Dec 10 Brett Favre, Amazingly, Continues To Haunt Green Bay

Matthew Stockman/Getty Images"Green Bay Packers make stunning season turn-around." Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers looked like they were headed for another long season back in October when they went 3-3, losing to the Washington Redskins and the Miami Dolphins. Aaron Rodgers and the Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
Pack however, have won four straight, including two beat downs against the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys. The two victorys were so bad for the opposing teams that both Brad Childress and Wade Philips lost their head coaching jobs. Improving on penalties since their breakdown against Chicago, turnover ratio where they now rank at +8 and 3rd down conversions, have lead the Green Bay Packers into one of the best NFC teams. Aaron Rodgers is starting to put up some monster numbers, with nearly 600 yards, seven touchdowns, no interceptions and 60 yards running, in his last two games. With numbers like these, Aaron Rodgers may keep his interception total below 13, the same number he had back in 2008, and may even be brought back into the MVP discussion. Green Bay now looks to take the NFC North Crown which they haven't won since 2007 and may even be on their way to take the top seed in the NFC. Wouldn't it be nice to just end it there? To just let it be about how good the Packers have been Reebok Dallas Cowboys #9 Tony Romo Realtree camo Jersey
oing and how they suddenly belong back in the Super Bowl contenders? Do you think it's unfair for the media to keep associating Favre with anything the Packers do?Do you think it's unfair for the media to keep associating Favre with anything the Packers do?Yes73.8%No24.4%I'm Not Sure1.9%Total votes: 160Every time I hear about the Green Bay Packers, whether they're fighting the Dolphins, the Cowboys or anybody, it just has to lead the commentators to talking about Brett Favre and the Vikings. Now, they can talk all they want about what's going on up in Minnesota, but it's been completely ridiculous that they can't stop a Green Bay discussion lead to a Minnesota discussion. As long Brett Favre is playing, or if television cameras are in front of him, Green Bay will never just be Green Bay or Aaron Rodgers' Green Bay. It will always be "Brett Favre's old place." Now I must admit that I'm not entirely innocent in this area as well. I've written multiple articles on Brett Favre and the Vikings. But I always Reebok Denver Broncos #15 Tim Tebow Realtree camo Jersey
thought that after Aaron Rodgers beat him, the commentators would talk about how Aaron Rodgers beat him. But no, it's all about how Brett Favre got beat and how he's screwing things up in Minnesota. It's time the Commentators start treating Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers as simply that: Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

New York Jets: Can Rex Ryan's Team Dethrone Bill Belichick's Pats in the AFC?

Bill Belichick and Rex Ryan will meet for a fourth time as the New York Jets look to sweep the season series and solidify their lead in the AFC East and a possible bye come the AFC playoffs hanging in the balance. In just his second season as a NFL head coach, Rex Ryan has football jerseys
built an impressive resume and body of work.
Eighteen regular-season wins. Two playoff victories. An AFC Championship Game appearance. A 9-2 start and a shot to dethrone the New England Patriots in their building come Monday night on national television.
This is what Ryan has envisioned, preached and strived for in just two seasons in New York—to become an immediate candidate as one of the NFL's elite franchises.
The obstacle in his path is the very person who held his job for about a day, only to take his expertise and experience to New England, where he's won four conference championships and three Super Bowls.
On the day Rex Ryan was hired byNew York Jetsowner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum, he told the media he had no intentions of kissing Bill Belichick's ring.
He just wants a ring of his own.
And for the championship-starved New York Jets, they Chicago Bears jersey
are getting the game they wanted on a national stage in December for what will be not only for the AFC East crown, but in all probability, the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.
For the son of former Jet defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan,Rex Ryanis thelogical pedigree to get what Eric Mangini, Herm Edwards, Al Groh, Bill Parcells, Rich Kotite, Pete Carroll, Bruce Coslet, Joe Walton, Walt Michaels, Lou Holtz and Charley Winner could not do—win an NFL championship. That road to a championship runs through the New England Patriots.
Fora Jet victory will complete a sweep of the Patriots, move Gang Green to a 10-2 record and establish a two-game lead with just four to play. The Jets will be in the driver's seat not only for a divisional championship, but the No. 1 seed in the AFC tournament will be for New York to lose.
The large shadow of the New York Giants and their three Super Bowl rings will be somewhat removed if, in the inaugural season in their new facility, the Jets can claim a Lombardi Trophy out of the gate.
Rex Ryan came to New York understanding the frustration of nfl throwback jerseys
this New York Jet fan base and the desire not only to win but to become a sustaining power in the AFC. What Belichick has done for the Patriots is what Ryan wants so badly to happen here in the Meadowlands.
The only question that remains is simply this: Can the Jets dethrone the New England Patriots?

NFL Week 13 Picks: Philadelphia Eagles Beat The Houston Texans Tonight

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesThe Houston Texans head to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles on December 2, game time is at 8:20 PM ET.The teams have met two times this decade. First, back in 2002 when the Eagles took the game by a score off 35-17, and then again in 2006, as Philadelphia walked away victors once again, 24-10.The NFL odds have Philadelphia as -8 over Houston with a game total of 51 points. The Eagles took a tough loss against the Bears in Week 12, 31-26. Jay Cutler led the Chicago offense 4 Brett Favre White jersey
with four touchdowns to tie a career best, exposing the Eagles secondary as he completed 14-of-21 for 247 yards. It was the fourth straight victory for Chicago and the 31 points were a season high. Meanwhile, Eagles QB Michael Vick did his best for Philadelphia, completing 29 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns. He also chipped in with nine carries and another 44 yards rushing. The defense found its footing and the offense mounted a 13-point rally in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a host of injuries that plagued the Eagles with CBs Asante Samuel and Ellis Hobbs both sidelined for the game. With the loss, the Eagles are 5-1 in games which Vick has started and completed, and are sustaining their hold on first place in the NFC East with a 7-4 record. The offense has been strong, led by a rushing attack, which ranks third overall with close to 147 yards per game.LeSean McCoy heads that attack with 156 attempts and 779 yards for six touchdowns. Vick can move, contributing 419 yards on the ground for five touchdowns, and from the air Vick has completed 149 passes for 1,941 yards and 13 more scores. The defense always keeps the team in the game ranking 13th in opponents passing with 214 yards per game and 12th in opponent rushing with under 103 a game. The Texans smacked the Titans last week for a 20-0 win, and they still play them one more time this season in Week 15.Midway through the fourth quarter, tensions led to a brawl Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
between Houston’s Andre Johnson and Tennessee’s Cortland Finnegan.Apparently, Finnegan was more concerned with egging the star receiver on than focusing on trying to win the game. Some sentiments carried over from last year when the two went at it, with the Texas coming away with the victory in that game as well.QB Matt Schaub completed 25-of-35 en route to 178 yards and two touchdown passes. Arian Foster ran past the Titan line to the tune of 143 yards on 30 carries. The Texans improved their record to 5-6 with the win, third in the AFC South. Schaub has completed 236 passes for 2,752 yards and 15 touchdowns. The team ranks 15th overall in passing with 235 a game.Rushing has been the team’s strength, ranking seventh with 132.5 a game. Foster is having a strong season, racking up 1,147 yards and 12 touchdowns. Andre Johnson has 65 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns. It’s been a shame that that entire offensive prowess has been wasted by a porous Texans secondary that has allowed opponents to pass for nearly 300 yards a contest (31st). A big part of the four-game losing streak that saw the team get outscored 120-91 in weeks 8-11.Matt’s Free Prediction: Philadelphia 31, Houston 24The Eagles definitely have the upper hand in this one, by both track record and current play. The Philadelphia defense will do a good job of neutralizing Houston’s running game and Vick 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
should have an easy time throwing over the heads of the Texans secondary, leading the Eagles to an eighth win.For more advice on how all the Week 13 games, check out our expert NFL picks from the top NFL handicappers in the business

Last-Minute Remarks on SNF Week 15 Picks

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesWeek 15 (December 19):Tentative game: Green Bay @ New EnglandProspects: 9-2 v. 8-4. No longer looking like a potential Super Bowl preview, but the Packers prevented it from getting any more lopsided,so still a decent bet to keep its spot. No other game has 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
a shot if the tentative game bias is as I suspect.Protected games: Jets-Steelers (CBS) and Eagles-Giants (FOX).Other possible games mentioned on last week’s Watch and their records: Saints (9-3)-Ravens (8-4), Jags (7-5)-Colts (6-6), and Falcons (10-2)-Seahawks (6-6).Impact of Monday Night Football: Whether or not the Patriots win will actually have a big impact on how the tentative, in isolation, is seen. The Pats lose, it’s a good game at 9-3 v. 8-4 that isn’t lopsided, but not exactly the Super Bowl preview it seemed like earlier in the season, and in fact both teams will be looking like wild card contenders more than everything else. The Pats win, it’s a little lopsided at 10-2 v. 8-4, but it still has a little bit of the aura of a titanic clash.Analysis: The Ravens loss is the best thing that could have happened to the tentative. Had the Ravens won and the Pats lost, it would look like the Ravens were going to get a first-round bye and the Pats wouldn’t. Combine that with the Packers’ struggles and an open question whether the defending champs are better than the best record in the NFC, and few people would pick Packers-Pats ahead of Saints-Ravens, and the NFL’s tentative game bias would be tested like never before. Instead, the Packers did their part as well, and a Pats loss would give both games the same pair of records, which always goes to the tentative. Would a Pats win make the game lopsided enough for the NFL to consider a flex despite the good Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
records? Don’t count on it.Final prediction: Green Bay Packers @ New England Patriots (no change).Actual selection: Green Bay Packers @ New England Patriots (matches prediction, no change).

Pittsburgh Steelers "James Harrison's assault charge merits a suspension"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are generally known as a clean organization. With the loss of Alan Faneca, a team captain, and James Harrison's arrest for assault, second-year coach Mike Tomlin has his first genuine Public Relations alarm to answer. It's in his best interest to suspend the Pro Bowl linebacker quickly if he is indeed guilty (an affidavit entered at the time of Harrison's arrest says Harrison corroborated everything the victim said). Harrison was arrested in Ohio Township (outside Pittsburgh) March 8 on charges of 6 Sanchez White Jersey
assault. He is accused of slapping his girlfriend across the face after he broke in her room, where she had locked herself in, presumably to avoid Harrison. When Tomlin took the reins from former coach Bill Cowher in January of 2007, his immediate concern was getting the Steelers back into the playoffs after an 8-8 season. Since then, he's presided over the bitter departure of Faneca, the arrest of RB Najeh Davenport for assault, the general collapse of one of the better offensive lines in the game, a somewhat questionable first round draft pick (Lawrence Timmons) and now, a criminal charge against one of the team's best players. How will Tomlin spin this? Cowher had to deal with then-rookie WR Santonio Holmes picking up a domestic assault charge in the summer of 2006, but that was eventually dismissed. Former Steeler Richard Siegler was charged with running a prostitution ring in Las Vegas in 2006, when he was a member of the Steelers practice squad. He was quickly released from the team.Harrison, a Pro Bowl OLB in 2007, won't be so easily dismissed. Obviously, Tomlin is not going to condone Harrison's behavior. Considering the Steelers' reputation, and the pressure NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has placed on the league since he took over in 2006, suspending Harrison for one game may be the Steelers' wisest course of action. Harrison has become a fan-favorite ever since he was placed on the practice squad as an undrafted free agent in 2002. Known for his toughess - which earned him the nickname "Silverback" - Harrison gained YouTube fame in 2003 when he picked up and slammed a fan on the ground who ran on the field during the Steelers at Browns game that season. It's not so 6 Sanchez Green Jersey
funny anymore. His image certainly has been damaged, and a traditionally straight-arrowed organization is going to be forced into action over this incident. While we can expect the standard "We're going to let the authorities investigate the matter before rushing to action," the affidavit filed by Ohio Township Police basically says Harrison admitted to it. It might help the Steelers save some face with their fans and the league to look into the matter right away, and avoid any distraction going into the draft in April and training camp this summer.Cowboys jersey

San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith Brandon Lloyd Kurt Warner

It's been a tough season for both the San Francisco 49ers (2-10) and the Arizona Cardinals (4-8). The Cardinals have earned half of their wins this season against the 49ers, sweeping the two games, winning 31-14 in week 4 in Mexico City, and defeating the 49ers on Sunday 17-10. Sunday's win marked the first time that the Cardinals had won in San Francisco since 1978.In the first meeting in Mexico City the 49ers led 14-0 after the first quarter thanks to two defensive touchdowns. Things went sour for the 49ers after the first quarter as they wereSteelers 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
pummeled the rest of the way. Cardinals quarterback Josh McCown threw for a career high 385 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin each had a touchdown. Cardinals place kicker Neil Rackers added six field goals in the victoryThe first meeting was very sloppy, and rookie quarterback Alex Smith saw his first major action when he took over for Tim Rattay. Smith completed 6/10 passes for 34 yards. Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd caught 7 passes for 102 yards. The 49ers were out gained by the Cardinals 463-168.On Sunday, at Monster Park, the Cardinals rode the arm of quarterback Kurt Warner and the strength of wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. Trailing 10-9 in the 4th quarter and facing a 3rd down and 20, Warner took the shotgun snap and found Boldin on short pass over the middle that Boldin took to the house. Boldin caught the ball, made two guys miss, broke a tackle with three guys on him, and darted down the sideline diving into the end zone for a 54 yard touchdown that proved to be the difference. The game marked another sloppy performance by the two teams. The Cardinals turned the ball over twice on Kurt Warner interceptions and failed to score in all three trips to the red zone. They also only managed 65 yards rushing, but were still able to beat the San Francisco 49ers. Warner exploited the young 49ers secondary all day with Boldin and Fitzgerald both going over the 100 yard receiving mark. Boldin caught 11 balls for 156 yards and 1 touchdown, while Fitzgerald hauled in 8 balls for 129 yards. In Alex Smith's return from injury, the rookie played well, but made a few rookie mistakes. Smith completed 16/23 passes, yet he only threw for 185 yards and had 3 interceptions. The 49ers turned the ball over 4 times. The 49ers were unable to establish the run, only running for 51 yards. Johnnie Morton and Brandon Lloyd were Smith's top targets, with Morton catching 3 balls for 66 yards and Lloyd Steelers 36 Bettis Jersey
catching 5 for 46 yards.Once again the 49ers played sloppy and were unable to do much on offense. Also, once again the team showed hope with a few good plays that stick out in an otherwise abysmal performance. They blocked a punt, and Smith had a great first half where he completed 11/12 passes for 138 yards, and they led going into the 4th quarter. For now Smith remains winless and has yet to throw a touchdown pass in his career.

San Francisco 49ers "Patrick Willis could blaze path towards new defensive identity"

After ending last year on a positive note (a big win in Denver that eliminated the Broncos from the playoffs), the 49ers headed into the offseason with a ton of cap room and a strong desire to add an impact player on defense. The team aggressively pursued free-agent All-Pro linebacker Adalius Thomas, Steelers 36 Bettis Jersey
a versatile player who had a history with Niners head coach Mike Nolan (Thomas played under Nolan during the coach's tenure in Baltimore). Despite this connection, Thomas chose to sign with the New England Patriots. This failed attempt to land a marquee free-agent linebacker may actually have been a blessing in disguise. San Francisco lost out on the Thomas sweepstakes, but that paved the way for a brilliant new addition to the team. With the 11th overall pick of April's draft, the 49ers helped carve themselves a new defensive identity. When the Niners chose Ole Miss linebacker Patrick Willis, they secured an athletic, explosive playmaker who has great leadership skills and an unquestioned desire to succeed in the NFL. Nolan made it clear that Willis will be instrumental in the transition to a 3-4 defense. "I expect him to make an impact right away. In the third down area, I would expect him to be a starter right away," Nolan said. While at Mississippi, Willis achieved many accolades. He was the 2006 Butkus Award winner -- an honor issued to the nation's top linebacker. He led the highly competitive SEC in tackles. Off the field, Willis is active in community service and is often commended for his strong character. Willis will surely benefit from the tutelage of assistant head coach and Hall of Fame LB Mike Singletary, whose guidance will offset Willis' inexperience with the 3-4 (he played 4-3 in college). Willis should develop quickly because of his high football IQ, his speed and his ability to make instinctive plays. In addition to his amazing athletic abilities, Willis has a cool confidence about him. When asked by a reporter if he expects to start, Willis said, "Yes, sir; there is no doubt in my mind." With an aging Derek Smith parked in the middle of the team's defense, truer words have never been spoken. The 49ers are expected to challenge for a division title this season. The signing of cornerback Nate Clements (eight years, $80 million) and the acquisition of 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
receiver Darrell Jackson are nice moves, but grabbing Willis will go down as the highlight of the 49ers' 2006 offseason. He's the type of player who has perennial Pro Bowler written all over him and can be the quarterback of the defense for the next decade. Securing the admirable work ethic and astounding athletic abilities of a guy like Willis is just one indication that 49ers are headed in the right direction. Keep track of Patrick Willis and the rest of the San Francisco 49ers

Tennessee Titans "Kearse arrested for DUI"

Tennessee Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence. The arrest took place at a traffic stop near the Vanderbilt University campus.Commentary: A Vanderbilt spokesman said that Kearse was stopped Sunday morning after campus police reported seeing his SUV weaving across the road.Kearse did take a field sobriety test but refused a Breathalyzer. He was arrested and charged with DUI and violation of Tennessee's implied consent law for failing to take the Breathalyzer test. The police let Kearse go later that morning. 4 Brett Favre White jersey
In a move to help stabilize a terrific offensive line going forward, the Tennessee Titans were able to tie down left tackle Michael Roos to a six-year, $43 million contract extension last month.Still, that's not to say there haven't been some problems keeping stability on the O-line. Former right guard Benji Olson retired after last season, and ex-left guard Jacob Bell signed with the St. Louis Rams via free agency. But the right side got an upgrade when the Titans signed ex-Indianapolis Colt Jake Scott earlier in the offseason, and the left guard position is in the throes of competition between two talented youngsters in Leroy Harris and Eugene Amano. So it would seem the line is solidified. Except right tackle.David Stewart, who has appeared in 30 games over the past two seasons and is known for having the appropriate lineman's mentality, is a standout right tackle who hasn't been given a long-term deal. The Mississippi State alumnus signed a one-year tender worth just over $2 million last week, which came after he had to sign a waver that allowed him to participate during the offseason. Stewart's uncertain future with the Titans is obviously a contrast to Roos, who will be in Tennessee for the long haul.Having just signed his own big-money deal, Roos is clearly in favor of locking up the line's other anchor in Stewart."Our line is relatively young still with the exception of Kevin (Mawae), so pretty much everyone is signed through except Stewart," the native Estonian said. "We get one more piece of the puzzle, we'll be together for a very long time."With Olson and Bell now gone, maintaining stability is dangerously close to giving way to damage control, which is why the lack of a long-term Stewart deal is baffling."They just got Roos done...There is a difference in the 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
position a little bit, but to me it is not as significant as some people may believe it is," Bus Cook, Stewart's agent, said. "It depends on what they think. They paid Roos, so they're going to have to pay David. Maybe they can, maybe they can't. We'll see."For the sake of the Titans' offense, fans should hope the team locks up Stewart soon.

Tennessee Titans "sign seventh-round CB Cary Williams"

Tennessee signed cornerback Cary Williams, a seventh-round pick, to a multiyear deal, the Tennessean reported Friday. The Titans open training camp July 25, and they have four picks left to sign -- first-round running back Chris Johnson, second-round defensive end Jason Jones, third-round tight end Craig Stevens and fourth-round defensive lineman William Hayes. Titans rookie contract status as of July 191 (24). RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina – Unsigned2 (54). DE Jason Jones, Eastern Michigan – Unsigned3 (85). TE Craig Stevens, California – Unsigned4 (103). CB Cary Williams, Washburn – Signed (three years, no financial terms disclosed) Tennessee signed its sixth-round pick, LB Stanford Keglar, to a four-year contract Friday. The Titans have six picks left to sign.Titans rookie contract status as of July 121 (24). RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina – Unsigned2 (54). DE Jason Jones, Eastern Michigan – Unsigned3 (85). OLB Stanford Keglar, Purdue – Signed (four years, no financial terms disclosed)7 (229). CB Cary Williams, Washburn – UnsignedOne of the big hooplas in Nashville is the fact that Tennessee's Jeff Fisher is embarking on his 14th consecutive season as head coach of the Titans. No current NFL coach is more tenured than the former USC safety. In today’s environment where a coach is here today, gone tomorrow -- whether in the NFL or college -- Fisher's mainstay status in Tennessee is truly unique and impressive.Reviewing his term of office and where the team is now, the question becomes: Can the longtime coach, who obviously heads a fairly talented bunch, get Tennessee deep into the playoffs?Since the team's magical 1999 season that ended with a Super Bowl berth, the Titans have recorded four playoff appearances, which is OK on the surface. However, in only one of those seasons, 2002, did the club get past the divisional round. Last season Tennessee made it to the playoffs, compiling a 10-win regular season. However, before the season’s final game, the Titans were sitting on a rickety bubble: A loss to Indianapolis would have done the Titans in. But after the Colts secured home-field advantage and a first-round bye weeks earlier, head coach Tony Dungy pulled all of his starters after the first quarter to save them for the playoffs. That was the catalyst which allowed the Titans to capitalize (barely) by playing the Colts’ backups and get the win. In other words, the only reason Tennessee won was because it was not playing the Peyton Manning-led Colts. Had Dungy left Manning and the rest of his starters in the entire game, chances are Tennessee would have lost. The Titans proved their inferiority during the first week of the playoffs, turning in a dismal performance en route to a 17-6 loss in San Diego. With that said, the Titans’ record has consistently improved over the past three seasons. Tennessee’s 4-12 mark in 2005 went to 8-8 in ’06, then, as mentioned, 10-6 last season. Under Fisher, then, the club has experienced regular-season progress. But to take the next step, Fisher and new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger must figure out how to make the 'O' score more touchdowns. The Titans averaged 19.4 points per game over the past two seasons; that number obviously has go up. And for that to happen in today’s NFL, you must have a serious passing game. And that’s where Tennessee’s lacking.Unfortunately for the Titans, it doesn't appear their Vince Young-guided aerial attack will be a whole lot better this year: The club squandered opportunities to land a No. 1 receiver during free agency and during the draft. 43 Polamalu black jersey
Tennessee's major offseason’s acquisitions came in the form of tight end Alge Crumpler and first-round running back Chris Johnson, which indicates it still plans on being a short-yardage team. After an offseason in which the Titans didn't seem to address their biggest need, a 2008 campaign lacking progress might be time for fans to begin calling into question the job Fisher is doing; the bottom line is that Tennessee can't be one-dimensional for the second straight season. Though the head coach isn't necessarily the one many look to as the individual making major personnel decisions, as executive vice president and head coach, the buck largely starts and stops with Fisher.

What’s in store for the pass catchers?

It’s no big secret to anyone that the are a run-first team. And run second. And, if they’re close enough, run third.Head coach Lane Kiffin has three more-than-capable running backs, a young, inexperienced passer behind center and an O-line built to clear rushing lanes.Passing the ball in 2008 will simply be a way to keep defenses honest and to pick up long-yardage first downs. It won’t be the way the silver and black plans on dominating or, for that matter, winning games. That doesn’t mean Oakland’s pass catchers won’t see plenty of 36 Bettis White Jersey
action throughout the season, though. They may not produce consistent fantasy-friendly numbers, but the wideouts and tight ends in Oakland are certainly capable of moving the chains. With preseason half over and the regular season less than three weeks away, let’s take a look at some possible finishing numbers for the Raiders’ pass catchers in ‘08.Javon Walker, WR: It’s been one rough offseason for the ex-Denver Bronco. After the Las Vegas robbery incident, Walker was reportedly contemplating retiring from football all together. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old is still Oakland’s No. 1 wideout this season, and will enter as that heading into the home opener against his former team. As long as he’s guaranteed $16 million, he’ll be guaranteed to make some plays. Expect a quiet season for Walker, but one filled with some memorable big plays, particularly in Week 1.Projection: 40 receptions, 525 yards (13.1 YPC), five TDsRonald Curry, WR: Curry has proven himself time and again to be a reliable target for any quarterback in a silver-and-black jersey. Yet, in that same time, he’s also proven to be more useful as a slot pass catcher than as a primary target. Curry’s never caught over 750 yards worth of balls in his seven-year career, and 2008 doesn’t appear to present any greater of a chance for him to do that. Still, Curry will rack up his share of catches with second-year passer JaMarcus Russell under center. Expect him to lead all Raiders wide receivers in first-down conversions this season.Projection: 36 receptions, 450 yards (12.5 YPC), four TDsDrew Carter, WR: Carter, a former Carolina Panther who signed with Oakland this offseason, is currently in a battle with Curry for the No. 2 wideout spot. He’s been silent thus far this preseason, however, and it appears Curry has the early edge. At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, though, Carter will be a very difficult target for the young Russell to not rely on, particularly in the red zone. Expect some big plays from the fifth-year receiver, but some fairly modest numbers.Projection: 25 receptions, 355 yards (14.6 YPC), four TDsJohnnie Lee Higgins, WR: Higgins has been busy giving both coaches and fans headaches on special teams, so his use on the offensive side of the football is still a bit suspect. Nevertheless, the speedy third-rounder should see some time on the field this year and post career numbers. Keep in mind, Higgins has six catches for 47 yards in his career.Projection: 15 receptions, 205 yards (13.7 YPC), zero TDsZach Miller, TE: If there’s one Raiders pass catcher worth giving a close look on your fantasy draft day, it’s Miller. The second-year tight end set a franchise rookie receiving record last year with 44 grabs for 444 yards, and he’s only looked better with time. Miller has the Raiders’ sole receiving touchdown this preseason and has the most catches of any starter on the team in the two games the Raiders have played. It’s no mistake, as the 22-year-old has already seemingly formed a natural bond with Russell. In Russell’s only start last season, he hooked up with Miller eight times for 84 yards. Expect the youngster to pick up right where he left off and win the numbers game in 2008.Projection: 67 receptions, 720 yards (10.7 YPC), seven TDsJohn Madsen, TE: When Miller needs a rest or the Raiders need another tight end, 25-year-old John Madsen is the other blocker/receiver who can make the big catch. Granted, the 240-pounder has never made more than 11 in a single season, but he’s always good for at least one big play per season. Madsen had a 57-yard reception in ‘06 and a 39-yarder last season. Don’t expect him to just disappear in 2008.Projection: Seven receptions, 75 yards (12.5 YPC), zero TDsRunning backs: Among the halfbacks -- Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden and Michael Bush -- and fullbacks -- Justin Griffith and Oren O’Neal -- Russell will make plenty of new friends this year. All five of these players will see their fair share of opportunities out of the backfield with Russell behind center. Last year, Oakland’s rushers combined for 89 grabs for 671 yards. Expect more catches and yards this year with a new, more explosive brigade of 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
weapons coming out of the backfield.Projection: 98 receptions, 775 yards (7.9 YPC), five TDs2007 TOTALS: 260 receptions, 2,631 yards, 17 TDs (31st in NFL)2008 PROJECTED TALLY: 288 receptions, 3,105 yards, 25 TDs (Would have ranked 22nd in NFL in 2007)Anthony Carroll can be contacted at (18)
